About Austrian Vignette
A valid vignette must be obtained by the drivers who use the motorways and expressways in Austria. A vehicle weighing no more than 3.5 tonnes needs to be registered in the online system.
In the case of vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes, a special device must be installed that calculates the driven distance and required fee.
There are several digital vignette types available for travellers depending on the validity period: for 10 days, 60 days, or 1 year.
Why a digital vignette for Austria is necessary
An Austrian digital vignette must be purchased by drivers of vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on the motorways and expressways. Vignettes are popular across Europe, and you may need them in Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, etc. If the vehicle weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, a special measuring unit is a must-have.
Note that it is not required to have a vignette on the below sections, as those are exceptions:
- A1 Westautobahn – road between the border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction;
- A12 Inntalautobahn – road between the border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction;
- A14 Rheintal/Wlagau Autobahn – road between the country at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction;
- A26 Linzer Autobahn – road under construction.
Penalties
A digital vignette for Austria is automatically linked to the licence plate number, and it is simple to detect drivers who don’t have a valid vignette. Cameras and patrols constantly monitor the roads in Austria.
The fine for driving without a vignette is 65 EUR for motorbikes and 120 EUR for cars up to 3.5 tonnes. Drivers of vehicles above 3.5 tonnes without the GoBox system must pay 240 EUR.
